Ms. Alseth - Literacy Specialist

My name is Kate Alseth and I am the Literacy Specialist at KSTM.  I teach Reading Skills, English Language Arts, and support teachers with literacy instruction.  I am also the English Language Arts department chair.  This is my 16th year of teaching and during that time I have taught literacy and literature to kindergartners, graduate students, and everything in between.  I am currently working on my doctoral degree through the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

In my free time I like spending time with my family, friends, and my dog Hank.  I love to be outdoors hiking, kayaking, and biking.  I am a huge music fan and love to see live music and performances.  Of course, I also love to read and write stories and poetry.

ELA Syllabus

English Language Arts 6 provides opportunities to learn, practice, and master the Nebraska English Language Arts Standards of reading, writing, speaking, and multiple literacies. Students will have multiple opportunities to engage in a variety of tasks and activities to further develop their competencies in the four ELA standards.

This year we will use the Collections textbook to read a variety of fiction and non-fiction including novels, short stories, dramas, poetry, and essays. These writing pieces will model the different writing styles we will be working on ourselves. Writing assignments will include timed responses, journal writing, essays, critiques, and creative pieces. Vocabulary and grammar assignments will also be an important part of this class. Because we are a community of learners, please also expect to work periodically in group situations and to present information to your peers in groups or individually.
